The skin is the body’s largest organ, covering the entire surface area and protecting it from microbes and the elements. We, in turn, need to protect this vital organ from the harmful effects of exposure to the elements, and keep it nourished and healthy so that it can last a lifetime. Bear in mind, the skin also regulates body temperature, and allows us to experience sensations of cold, heat, pain and touch, so we need to treat it well and give it the best care possible. The sebaceous glands present in the hair follicles of the skin produce natural fats such as triglycerides and cholesterol, as well as sebum, which forms a slightly greasy surface film to protect the skin and keep it supple and flexible. When sebum accumulates, however, the pores become clogged and acne may result. Many other problems can also affect this perennially exposed organ, resulting in a variety of skin disorders, from mild irritations to dangerous skin cancer. Now that we know a little bit more about the skin, it is time to understand how to take care of it. Since nature already provided us with the fundamental ingredients (the natural fats and oils present in the skin), we need to complement these using nature’s bounty. There are many organic products all around us, some outside in the backyard, others in the cupboard or refrigerator. The market and supermarket can yield a wide variety of natural ingredients which we underestimate, greatly limiting their capabilities. We need to familiarize ourselves with their uses, because some are quite versatile in what they are able to do for our skin, hair and body, and are so much gentler and more soothing than synthetic products.

One of the most popular and useful organic products is Coconut Oil, produced from the fruit of the coconut tree which is found mainly in tropical countries. This amazing oil, which research has shown to be good for so many health problems including Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes as well as Alzheimer’s Disease, is also beneficial to the skin. Conditions such as eczema, skin rashes and irritations, psoriasis, fungal infections and acne can be effectively treated with coconut oil, rather than many of the harsh chemicals present in synthetic products. This natural oil is still used by many as a natural skin moisturizer, preferred over the more attractively packaged lotions and creams.

Coconut is a personal favourite of mine. I recently began to use it in combination with other organic oils such as almond oil, olive oil and castor oil for my hair and face, and sometimes to moisturize my hands. My skin now feels soft and smooth, and wrinkles have disappeared. Dark spots have faded, and my hair looks healthier than it has looked in a long time. Instead of spending a ton of money on expensive hair and skin products, these oils are gradually replacing quite a few of my usual cosmetics, and the benefits are clear for all to see. From time to time, other organic skincare products will be featured on this site, as we explore some of the benefits to be derived from utilizing what nature has bountifully provided. Bear in mind, however, in your quest to seek out and use natural products, that many of these ingredients, even though they are listed on the labels of your favourite health or beauty products, are not necessarily the best quality, and some may be combined with chemicals or synthetic substances, thus nullifying or limiting their effectiveness. Some are present in such small quantities that they are rendered useless. So it is important to do due diligence, in terms of examining the other listed ingredients carefully. Sometimes, if you are able to get access to the plant or natural product, try to find out how best it can be used in its natural state, as this can optimize the benefits to the skin, hair and body. You will be very happy with the results, and even if there are side-effects, these are generally milder than reactions to chemicals. Some persons like to create their own products including soap, shampoo, deodorant and lotion, and there are several sites which provide such recipes. If you are thus minded, then by all means, do so, and share the results with us. If you prefer buying ready-made organic skincare and hair care products, browse our amazing selection.
